Tipi Encampment & Contest
National Powwow XV is proud to announce that we had 20 tipis in camp over the course of four days!
Darry Wood brought his 26’ tipi from Hayesville, North Carolina. Affectionately known the “BAT”, transportation for this lodge was generously underwritten by five individual supporters.
The tipi contest on Saturday afternoon was conducted by three experienced judges: Joel Hendricks (Illinois), Don Walske (Texas) and Darry Wood (North Carolina)
The top 10 Tipis at NPW 15 were:
1. Eric Blore – Hendersonville, NC, – Eric received the Collins award and buffalo robe (courtesy of Crazy Crow Trading Post).
2. Alva Burnett and family – Fulton, Illinois.
3. Linda Holley – Jacksonville, Florida.
4. Tim Deane – Morristown, Tennessee.
5. Gail Nelson – Mattoon, Illinois.
6. Steve Frezza and family – Erie, Pennsylvania.
7. Tony Grey Wolf – Frankfort, Indiana.
8. Sam Herndon and family – Scott City, Missouri.
9. Tom O’Malley – Montgomery, Illinois.
10. Diana Wright – Ann Arbor, Michigan.
We experienced hot days, cool evenings and a good grassy area to set up on – and only one night of gentle rain.
We also welcomed many enthusiastic visitors from Danville and surrounding communities.
Special thanks to everyone who brought their tipi to camp, our contestants, our judges, seminar instructors, and the Committee for their support of America’s first mobile home.
As always, we remain indebted to the creative skills and genius of Native American women for this functional architecture and beautiful furnishings.
Have a good summer –
Peter Durkin, Houston, Texas, 7/14/11.
