White Star Gourd Dance Society & Auxiliary

White Star Gourd Dance Society and Auxiliary was established to promote and introduce Gourd Dancing to the Midwest in a social setting and to support educational programs of Native Americans.

The White Star Gourd Dance Society was established during the 1995 Tecumseh Lodge Labor Day Weekend Powwow in Tipton, Indiana.  The Society was established to promote and introduce gourd dancing to the Midwest in a social setting by Headsman Dick King. Joining Dick King as Headsman are Teed Howard, Rich Perry and Julian Simmons.  As a society, White Star is recognized by Satethieday Khatgomebaugh (White Bears People) and has been asked and co-hosted several of their Gourd Dances in Anadarko, Oklahoma.  Today, White Star has approximately 40 members from several states, but mainly from central Indiana.

Larry Kincer

Gnawbone, IN

Our head veteran dancer for NPW 15 is Larry Kincer.  Larry served in the US Air Force and Ohio Air National Guard from 1986 to 1994 when he finished his serves as a Staff Sergeant.  He served during Operation Desert Storm with the 1st Combat Support Element in support of First Tactical Fighter Wing and the 4404th Composite Fighter Wing at King Fahd Air Base, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.

Larry is originally from the Dayton, Ohio area where he was an Eagle Scout and Vigil member of the OA during his youth.  He attended college at Wright State University studying Computer Eng.  He currently calls Gnawbone, IN home where he lives his wife Karen and their two children Andrew and Sarah . Larry runs a small business called Oklahoma Territory, making dance clothes for powwow participants, collectors and museums around the world.  Larry specializes in making porcupine roaches and silver work but also does feather work and makes moccasins regularly.  He has been dancing and singing at powwows since the early 80’s and has attended powwows in most all of the states east of the Rockies as well as several provinces of Canada.  Larry sings both northern and southern styles and has served as head singer at many dances in the mid-west area over the years.

Larry would like to ask all of those reading this to take a moment and privately think of those serving at this time at bases, posts and ports stateside and overseas.  Whether in combat zones, a ship on the high seas or the base across town…they are all in harm’s way and put their lives on the line everyday for all of us.  These young men and women decide to serve for many personal reasons, but whatever those reason are and no matter the job they hold, they are the reasons we enjoy such tremendous in this country. Please take a moment and consider all they do for all of us and how little they ask for in return. Thank you!

Marty Thurman

Shawnee, OK

National Powwow is proud to announce Marty Thurman as our Head Northern Man.  Marty is a champion dancer and has won many contest powwows around the country.  Marty is of the Sac & Fox, Comanche, Shawnee, and Delaware nations.  He dances many styles but enjoys most Grass and Chicken.  Marty also enjoys singing.  He is Head Singer for Sizzortail and loves to jam with many other groups that include Buckwild, Wild Band of Comanches, and Southern Boys.

Marty lives in Shawnee Oklahoma with his wife Sophia Lynn and his children Tyler and Tylyn.  Marty is a family man first and foremost and puts family obligations above all commitments.  The Thurman’s travel the country together and most weekends can be found at a powwow or rodeo.  Marty and the fam love to visit Las Vegas as well as stop in and see family all over the US.

Marty graduated from Shawnee High School and currently takes classes at Seminole State College.

Marty is honored to serve as the Head Man dancer and would like to thank his family and friends for their love and support.  Marty welcomes all people to come out and dance and have a good time.

Buffalo River Singers

The Buffalo River Singers are an old style northern singing group from northwestern Minnesota. Formed in 2009, the group is primarily comprised of singers from the Delaware, Ojibwe, Hidatsa, Dakota, Creek, Shawnee and Sauk tribes. Buffalo River began as an informal group for local experienced singers to practice, and grew quickly into a regional drum group.  Since 2009 we have been asked to serve as host drum several times. We are very honored and grateful for the opportunity to be host Northern Drum for the National Powwow.  We are looking forward to bringing you our style of music.
